New York fines Barclays $15m over CEO’s whistleblowing error

Barclays has been fined $15m by the US state of New York over its chief executive Jes Staley’s attempts to unmask a whistleblower in 2016.

The UK bank confirmed the settlement with the NY State Department of Financial Services on December 18. It comes seven months after Staley was fined £642,430 by UK regulators.

Staley was publicly reprimanded by the bank but allowed to keep his job as CEO. The decision angered whistleblowers, who said it would discourage others from reporting wrongdoing at their workplaces.
