Local cancer care providers accused in whistleblower suit

An unsealed federal complaint names Florida Cancer Specialists and 21st Century Oncology.

Two large cancer treatment networks with locations in Sarasota and Manatee counties are accused in a federal whistleblowers’ lawsuit of agreeing to share patients exclusively in order to shut out competitors.

The suit argues that a collusion between Florida Cancer Specialists and 21st Century Oncology violated state and federal laws against kickbacks and split-fee arrangements, within a territory that stretches “from Tampa to Marco Island.” Further, the plaintiffs allege improper treatment of cancer patients by unqualified medical assistants, Medicare billing fraud and discriminatory treatment of employees.
