Elder care company with Valley operations agrees to pay $15.5M in whistleblower case

Guardian Elder Care Holdings Inc., which has associated nursing and rehabilitation operations in the region, agreed to pay about $15.5 million to settle a whistleblower lawsuit that alleged medically unnecessary rehabilitation therapy was provided to residents to reach revenue goals, authorities report.

The action was taken on behalf of the United States by two former employees in federal court in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and led to the settlement with the company that operates facilities in Bethlehem, Quakertown and Monroe and Carbon counties as well as more than 45 other locations in Pennsylvania, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.
