Columbia occupational therapists blow the whistle on Medicare fraud

Two former occupational therapists at a Columbia nursing home were whistleblowers in a Medicare fraud case that was settled this month for $30 million.

Kristi Emerson and LeeAnn Holt collected evidence against Signature Healthcare, when they worked at its old Trotwood Avenue location in Columbia. The local facility was sold to a New Jersey company in May.

The women turned over information and documentation to the U.S. Health and Human Services Department, which investigated. The U.S. Attorney’s Office found the Louisville-based company pressured patients into “unreasonable” and “unnecessary” therapy so they would qualify for the highest levels of Medicare reimbursement.

The total fraud was about $244 million companywide, the U.S. Attorney’s Office alleged in pursuing the case.
